Kapiti Petanque Club - The Rex Hayes Mixed Doubles tournament

RH Trophy Winners

The Rex Hayes Mixed Doubles tournament was held at Kapiti Petanque Club last weekend. Rex was a much respected and popular member of the Kapiti Club and clubs throughout New Zealand.. He was a coach, passing on his knowledge of the game, a top notch player, who won plenty of competitions and was deservedly made a Life Member. This annual tournament is a tribute to him.

It was a wonderful turnout, with 26 teams competing from various clubs throughout the country.   Some of the competitors had not played in any tournament before and did extremely well.   The weather was sunny and very warm for this time of year, which made the day even better.  Four games were played before lunch. Lunchtime gave everyone a chance to catch up with members from other clubs and to re-group before heading into the afternoon eliminations.  The finalists were decided with some unexpected results.  Shirley MacDonald, along with Craig Watson, took out the Plate. This was Craig’s first foray into competition and he played extremely well.
