Em Rule - Kate Morgan

Em Rule's Kate Morgan-Riggir has over 20 years' editing experience; she can help turn your writing into a document you can be proud of.  Kate also has over 15 years' experience in writing; so if you don't have the time to write that report or web content, she can do it for you.

Kate believes the important thing to remember is that you're the expert in your field; as an editor or writer, she's there to help you communicate your ideas as clearly as possible. Her aim is to retain your voice and your ideas in your writing, and have your document express them in a way that your audience will understand and enjoy reading.

Editing
Kate's 20+ years of editing experience encompasses the book publishing industry as well as the government and corporate worlds. She has mentored students of the well-regarded Whitireia publishing course.

Kate has experience editing documents from cooking and gardening books, Waitangi Tribunal reports, corporate and government reports, through to user guides, marketing material and web content.

Accurate, efficient and professional, Kate believes editing works well when it's a conversation with the writer.

Kate's process

It can be daunting to hand your carefully crafted document over to someone else. What if they change the meaning of what you've written?

Kate tends to make two types of changes to documents:

  • consistency and spelling – making sure that a word is spelt the same way all the way through the document, and that apostrophes and so on are used appropriately

  • rewording and rearranging sentences and paragraphs where the meaning isn't clear, or where the writing could be more concise and direct.

Kate tracks all changes, so you'll be able to see what she's done, and check that the meaning hasn't been changed. If you disagree with some of the changes, Kate will work with you to see if there's another way of expressing the idea.

Writing
Kate has also worked as a consultant and technical writer, and trained in the Information Mapping™ methodology. She provides plain English writing of brochure copy, case studies, procedural manuals, user guides and reports, as well as writing and structuring web content.

Plain English content that can be read by the general public is her speciality; and Kate also provides technical writing services.
